Ms. Gryczko Avellaneda, better known as Sra. Larisa, has taught in Baltimore City Public City Schools for the past three and a half years. Prior to her tenure in Baltimore City, Sra. Larisa gained teaching experience at the Grier School In Pennsylvania as well as in Spain and the Dominican Republic.
Sra. Larisa came to Baltimore City as part of the Baltimore City Teaching Residency Program - an alternate teaching certification program. She recently received her Professional Standard Teaching Certification for Spanish this fall.
Prior to teaching, Sra. Larisa worked in the field of community development for 10 years in Washington, D.C. and upstate NY. Sra. Larisa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Languages and Linguistics from Georgetown University and a Dual Master’s degrees from the University of New Mexico in Latin American Studies and Community and Regional Planning. Sra. loves to travel and has lived and worked in the Brazil, Portugal, Spain, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Peru. Sra. Larisa is also married to Jorge Avellaneda and has three sons, Adrian, Nicolas, and Diego.
Yutaka Houlette, Art Teacher (K-7)

Yutaka Houlette has experience working in a variety of art and teaching related jobs in both Japan and America. After studying art at the Maryland Institute College of Art, he moved back to Japan for a year and half to work as a translator and gallery assistant at Yamamoto Gendai, a contemporary art gallery. During this time he also taught English to students ranging from toddlers to college students.
Upon returning to Baltimore, Yutaka worked as a freelance editor for the advocacy based non-profit arts organization, Art On Purpose. He now teaches art at BIA to more than 300 K-7 students.
Shuaiyu Shen, First Grade Chinese

Ms. Shen was raised in China and went to earned a bachelor's degree in Vocal Music Performance at Guangxi Fine Arts College in 2000 after four years of hard studying. After she graduated from college, she taught art for 18 months at Guilin High School, which is affiliated with Guangxi Normal University.
She moved to US and settled in Baltimore. She attended Morgan State University, majored in Vocal Music Performance and graduated in 2003, receiving her Master's degree in Arts. She has taught at BIA since September 2008 and teaches Chinese language, mathemetics, science and social studies.
Nicole F. Tadzong, First Grade French

Madam Tadzong was born in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) to a Zairian mom and a Cameroonian dad. She moved to Cameroon at age three. She is married and the mother of three children.
She obtained a bachelors degree in General and Applied Linguistics from the University of Yaoundé 1 in Cameroon and Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Elementary Education.
“French has always been part of my life, as the first language I spoke was French and the first school I attended was a French school,” Sra. Tadzong said. “Also my undergraduate program was taught in French.”
