Madam Archer began studying French at Henrico High School in Richmond, Va. Inspired by her French teacher, Madame Smith, and her desire to learn the language, she continued my study of French at Virginia Commonwealth University with study abroad in Nantes, France.  While living in France, she visited Portugal, travelled through Spain, and shared memorable meals with new found friends in Venice, Italy. Upon graduating with a B.A. in French and minor in African-American Studies, she joined the Peace Corps in 1998.

As a Peace Corps volunteer, she served as a TEFL teacher in the Republic of Guinea, a French-speaking country on the west coast of Africa.  During her two-year service, she also had many opportunities to enjoy other parts of Africa, particularly, Senegal, Morocco, Ivory Coast, and Ghana.

At the completion of her Peace Corps service, she received a fellowship to study at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  After graduating with a M.A. in Intercultural Communication in 2003, she began teaching in Baltimore City. “Baltimore City Public Schools offer many opportunities for teachers and students to excel in the classroom which is why I enjoy what I do,” she explained. “My goal is to see our BIA students leave with the knowledge and understanding that one day they will be future ambassadors for the United States.”

Madam Florence Fomuso, French Teacher, Class Chair

Madam Florence Fomuso has taught for more than a dozen years and holds a B.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language and French as a Foreign Language from the Universite de France Comte of Besancon, France. She also holds a Master's degree in Elementary School Administration & Supervision from the University of the District of Columbia in Washinton D.C. She is a native of Cameroon, while her fellow teacher Bienvenu Gbokede is from Benin. Both teachers came to BIA in 2008.

"I'm an adventurer," Madam Fomuso said. "If you don't venture, you don't gain." The mother of twin boys,’ she added, "I love children. Because I love children, I can do anything for them. My father saw the love for them in me, hence, he chose this career for me." She grew up the oldest of 12 children in her family.

The goals for BIA’s fourth grade are for each member of the grade to work independently at the fourth grade instructional level by the year's end and to be able to pass on to fifth grade level work. The mathematics curriculum has 16 units, with each unit containing four to five concepts, which is very similar to the structure of the third and fifth grade math curriculum.

Monsieur Bienvenu Gbokede
, French Teacher

Bienvenu Gbokede has a Maryland Educator Certificate Standard Professional I in the area of French (7 to 12). He began pursuing a Master’s degree in Education at Strayer University in September 2008, and he plans to graduate in December 2010. He graduated in 2004 from Louvain-La-Neuve Catholic University in Belgium with a major in International Development. He also graduated from the National University of Benin with a Bachelor Degree in Linguistics and Communication.

He is married with two daughters, Yanne,7, and Elodie 9 years old. His wife Claire Joelle Amousou Gbokede is also a teacher. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies and is also a certified teacher in Social Study.

Mr. Gbokede chose to be a French Teacher at Baltimore International Academy because of the philosophy of the school, and its mission to provide an International Education for Global Leadership. BIA's decision to be an International Bacallaureate candidate school also appealed to him. “I am proud to work with our children through this tremendous program that will make a differerence in their life,” he said.

Monsieur Yutaka Houlette
, Art Teacher (K-7)

Monsieur Yutaka HouletteYutaka Houlette has experience working in a variety of art and teaching related jobs in both Japan and America.  After studying art at the Maryland Institute College of Art, he moved back to Japan for 18 months to work as a translator and gallery assistant at Yamamoto Gendai, a contemporary art gallery.  During this time he also taught English to students ranging from toddlers to college students.

Upon returning to Baltimore, Yutaka worked as a freelance editor for the advocacy based non-profit arts organization, Art On Purpose.  He now teaches art at the Baltimore International Academy to more than 300 K-7 students.
